From Seed to Science: Exploring Soil Health at Aspire

At Aspire International School, learning goes beyond the classroom. Recently, students from our Ecology Club took part in a hands-on research project focused on soil health and plant growth, gaining real experience in scientific investigation.

Over a 7-week programme running from late January to March 2026, students designed and carried out their own experiment, planting radishes from seed and carefully monitoring their growth.

Learning Through Real Scientific Research

This project introduced students to the full process of scientific research, from setting up experiments to collecting and analysing data.

Working step by step, students explored how different factors influence plant growth, particularly the role of soil quality. They tested a variety of compost mixtures alongside a non-composted sample, allowing them to compare results and understand how soil treatments affect crop development.

The project encouraged students to think critically, record observations accurately, and interpret their findings in a structured way.

From Data to Discovery

As the project progressed, students gathered and analysed their results, culminating in a written research report that reflected their findings and conclusions.

And of course, there was a reward at the end, sampling the radishes they had grown themselves, bringing the whole experience full circle from seed to harvest.

Supporting Learning Beyond the Classroom

The programme was delivered with the support of Mud Valley Foundation, whose expertise in soil health and regenerative agriculture helped shape the experience.

Students also had the opportunity to deepen their understanding through access to a soil health specialist and a visit to a working farm, where they could see sustainable agricultural practices in action.

We’re excited to invite our Aspire community, families, and friends to this year’s Spring Fair, taking place on Friday 24th April 2026.

It promises to be a fantastic day filled with food, activities, music, and community spirit, all set in the beautiful surroundings of the school.

Location: Aspire International School
Set-up (Stall Holders): From 9:00am

Stalls will be located around the A Block building, along the pathway to B Block, and across the sand pitch area, creating a lively and engaging space for everyone to explore.

Year 13 Students – Burgers

A perfect opportunity to enjoy flavours from around the world while supporting our students and school initiatives.

🎪 Student & Community Stalls

Secondary students will be running stalls by class, offering games, activities, and items for sale.
Year 11, 12 and 13 students will use their stall profits to support their end of year Prom.
Community stalls are welcome to join for a fee of €50, with all profits retained by the stall holder.
Charity stalls attend free of charge, and we’re pleased to welcome Goldra Dog Sanctuary this year.

How It Works

All purchases on the day will be made using €1 tickets, available to buy at the entrance.

These can be used across all stalls for food, drinks, and activities, making everything simple and easy for everyone attending.

🎶 Entertainment

There will be a student DJ providing music throughout the day, creating a great atmosphere.

We’re also hoping to include a karaoke stall, so get ready to join in and have some fun.

Supporting the School

Funds raised during the event will go towards a school project, currently being decided.

One of the ideas under consideration is a large climbing frame suitable for both primary and secondary students, and we welcome further suggestions from the community.

My Fierce Lady – A Fantastic Evening in Faro

Aspire International School proudly took to the stage in Faro with this year’s production of My Fierce Lady, and what an incredible success it was.

Written by Aspire teachers Bethany Blakemore and Emma Batten, the play followed the journey of Eliza, a talented young woman navigating ambition, identity, and the pressures of success. Through powerful performances and thoughtful storytelling, the students brought the message to life in a truly memorable way.

From the moment the curtain rose, the audience was captivated. The confidence, energy, and commitment shown by every student on stage was outstanding, and it was clear just how much hard work had gone into the production.

A brilliant achievement and a night to remember.

Beyond the performance itself, what stood out most was the teamwork and support between students, a real reflection of the strong community at Aspire.

March at Aspire International School: A Month of Learning, Exploration and Achievement

March was a truly exciting and enriching month at Aspire International School, filled with a wide range of experiences that reflect our commitment to learning both inside and beyond the classroom.

From science experiments and cultural trips to sporting events and future planning, our students have embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm, curiosity, and confidence.

Cross Country Day

One of the highlights of the month was our Cross Country Day, held under perfect sunny skies. The atmosphere was full of energy from start to finish, with students showing incredible determination, resilience, and team spirit.

It was fantastic to see so many parents taking part alongside the students, creating a real sense of community and shared achievement.

Congratulations to all our runners and race winners, and a special mention to the Yellow Team for taking the overall victory, with Green Team finishing a very close second in what was a tightly contested competition.

School Production: My Fierce Lady

Excitement was building across the school as students prepared for the upcoming production of My Fierce Lady, written by Aspire teachers Bethany Blakemore and Emma Batten.

The play explores identity, ambition, and the importance of staying true to yourself, following the journey of a young woman navigating the pressures of success and self-discovery.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

This month, students took their learning out into the Algarve, exploring history, culture, and nature first-hand.

A trip to Lagos offered a powerful and thought-provoking experience, including a visit to the Slave Market Museum and Lagos Museum, followed by time exploring the historic old town and relaxing in beautiful natural surroundings at Mata Nacional de Barão de São João.

Students also visited Quarteira Market and Museum, where they learned about the area’s rich history while experiencing the vibrant local fish market and enjoying time on the beach, perfectly linking with their Ancient World studies.

Our younger learners explored Portuguese heritage at the Museu de Loulé, engaging with the story of the “Lenda das Amendoeiras” through interactive and hands-on activities that brought culture and language to life.

Science, Curiosity and Discovery

Science played a big role this month, with students across the school engaging in hands-on, practical learning.

Our Year 3 students became “light explorers”, working in teams to understand how light travels and reflects using mirrors and torches. The excitement when they successfully guided light to hit their target was a brilliant moment of teamwork and problem solving.

Our in-house Science Competition brought together secondary students from across year groups, encouraging collaboration, enthusiasm, and a healthy sense of competition. Congratulations to Mars House for taking the win.

Meanwhile, our Biology Club completed their radish growing experiment, testing different soil conditions and analysing the results. This hands-on project helped students understand the real impact of soil quality on plant growth, while also developing their research and observation skills.

Sport and Enrichment

We were delighted to welcome the team from the Paul McGinley Golf Academy, who delivered a fantastic day of golf sessions for our students.

From primary through to secondary, students had the opportunity to learn new skills in a fun, supportive environment, guided by experienced and inspiring coaches. The enthusiasm across the school was clear, and many students are already eager for more.

Lessons will begin proper next term, places will fill up quickly so keep your eyes out for more information.

Looking Ahead: University Pathways

Our older students attended the International University Fair at the Hilton Vilamoura, where they explored a wide range of future opportunities.

With universities from across Europe in attendance, including Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Switzerland, and Ireland, students gained valuable insights into their next steps beyond school.

Events like this play an important role in helping students feel confident and prepared for the future.

Community, Connection and Culture

We also celebrated World Book Day, continuing a tradition that reflects the strong sense of community within Aspire.

Older students spent time reading to younger pupils, creating meaningful connections and sharing the joy of storytelling. Moments like these highlight the supportive and family-oriented environment we are proud to offer.

End of Term Celebration: A Voyage Through the Ages

The month concluded with a truly special End of Term Celebration, Os Descobrimentos – A Voyage Through the Ages, where students brought their learning to life through performance and storytelling.

The event reflected the children’s exploration of Portuguese history, showcasing their understanding of the Age of Discoveries in a creative and engaging way. From costumes to presentations, it was clear how much effort and enthusiasm had gone into preparing for the occasion.

Students performed with confidence and pride, sharing their work with families in a memorable afternoon that highlighted both their learning and their growing self-expression.

It was a wonderful way to end the term, celebrating not only academic progress but also creativity, culture, and the strong sense of community at Aspire.

Excellence in Mathematics at Aspire International School in the Algarve

At Aspire International School in the Algarve, Mathematics is not treated as a subject to simply get through. Instead, it is approached as a discipline to be understood, mastered, and enjoyed. Our philosophy is simple. Every child can succeed in Mathematics when the right structures, expectations, and support systems are in place.

A Personalised Approach to Mathematics Learning

Over the past two years, our Year 11 cohort has followed a highly personalised and carefully monitored learning journey. Through ambitious target setting, consistent progress tracking, detailed feedback, and regular one to one conversations, students of all abilities have been supported to build both confidence and strong academic performance in Mathematics.

This approach ensures that every student is challenged at the right level while receiving the guidance needed to succeed.

Strong International GCSE Mathematics Results

In November, many students sat their International GCSE Mathematics examination early, achieving results that the school community is extremely proud of.

Every student who entered the Higher Tier Mathematics paper passed, with several students achieving Grade 6 results and one exceptional Grade 9. Overall, the cohort achieved a pass rate of approximately 92 percent.

These results reflect not only the hard work of the students but also the strength of the structured Mathematics programme at Aspire International School in the Algarve.

Preparing Students for Advanced Mathematics

Following the exam results, students were guided onto pathways suited to their ambitions and readiness for further study.

One group is now working within an A Level and GCSE hybrid programme, where they are introduced to higher level mathematical concepts while continuing to strengthen top end GCSE performance.

Another group, led by Miss Gemma Bandera, is following a structured and challenging programme designed to deepen understanding and push students towards the highest grades they can achieve.

This flexible approach ensures that each student is supported to reach their full potential in Mathematics.

Building Confidence in Mathematics

At the heart of Mathematics teaching at Aspire International School is a clear philosophy.

Aspiration must be supported by structure.

We do not lower expectations to make students comfortable. Instead, we raise competence so that high expectations become comfortable.

The 92 percent pass rate, the Grade 6 results, and the Grade 9 achievement are important milestones. However, what matters most is that students are beginning to believe in their own capabilities.

Today’s assembly was a fantastic celebration of achievement across our school community, and a powerful reminder of why recognition matters in education.

Do small class sizes matter?

Class Size Matters, and the Evidence Is Clear

The next time someone says class size does not matter, send them this.

In the 1980s, one of the most important education studies ever conducted set out to answer a simple question. Does class size make a real difference to how children learn?

The study was called Project STAR, and it followed more than 11,000 students in Tennessee. This was not a survey. It was not based on opinion. It was a randomized controlled trial, the gold standard of research.

Students were randomly assigned to either small classes of 13 to 17 students or regular classes of 22 to 25 students. Everything else remained the same.

The results were clear.

Students in the smaller classes performed significantly better in reading and mathematics. The difference was strongest in the early years, from Kindergarten through Grade 3. These early gains were especially powerful for children from lower income backgrounds, helping to close learning gaps at a critical stage of development.

What makes this study even more remarkable is what happened next.

The benefits did not disappear over time. Those same students were more likely to graduate from high school. They were more likely to take college entrance exams. They were more likely to attend college. Later economic analysis even linked smaller class sizes in the early years to higher earnings in adulthood.

This was not a short term boost. It was a lifelong advantage.

And Tennessee was not alone.

In Wisconsin, the SAGE program reduced class sizes to approximately 15 students in the early grades. The outcome was the same. Students in smaller classes achieved higher results in reading and mathematics. Different state, different schools, same pattern.

Across decades of research, the strongest academic gains consistently appear when class sizes drop below 18 students in the early years. Not slightly smaller. Significantly smaller.

There is a simple reason for this.

A teacher has a finite amount of time, attention, and energy in a day. Teaching is not just delivering information. It is observing, guiding, correcting, encouraging, and responding to each individual child.

Every classroom is made up of different personalities, different abilities, different learning speeds, and different needs. Some students require reassurance. Some need extra explanation. Others need to be challenged further.

When there are 30 students in a room, that attention must be divided 30 ways. When there are 15, the dynamic changes completely.

More feedback becomes possible. Stronger relationships develop. Misunderstandings are identified sooner. Confidence grows. Learning accelerates.

This is not theory. It is reality, supported by decades of evidence.

You can debate cost. You can debate logistics. But the impact of smaller class sizes on learning, development, and long term outcomes is undeniable.

Fewer students means more attention. More guidance. More opportunity.
