Science, Biology

Amy worked in marine research and as an environmental consultant before training as a teacher. She holds a PhD in Marine Ecology from the National University of Ireland and is a strong proponent of the value of fieldwork in biology education. Amy worked for ten years teaching secondary science and biology in the state sector in the southwest of England.
She then transitioned to international teaching, spending four years at a large, well-established IB school in Hanoi, Vietnam. She loves to run and to be outside in nature, and so was keen to move to the cleaner air and better climate of Portugal. In her teaching, she hopes to enthuse her students with a love of living things and a respect for themselves, each other and the planet.

Amy Greenwood Q&A

What inspired you to become a Science and Biology teacher?

Answer:

I have always been fascinated by how the natural world works, from the smallest cells to entire ecosystems. Teaching allows me to share that curiosity with students and help them understand how science connects to everyday life.

Answer:

I focus on making lessons interactive and relevant, using practical experiments, real-world examples, and discussions. When students can see and experience science for themselves, it becomes far more meaningful and memorable.

Answer:

Beyond scientific knowledge, I hope students develop curiosity, critical thinking, and confidence in asking questions. Science is about exploration and discovery, and I want them to feel inspired to keep learning long after they leave the classroom.
