March at Aspire International School: A Month of Learning, Exploration and Achievement

March was a truly exciting and enriching month at Aspire International School, filled with a wide range of experiences that reflect our commitment to learning both inside and beyond the classroom.

From science experiments and cultural trips to sporting events and future planning, our students have embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm, curiosity, and confidence.

Cross Country Day

One of the highlights of the month was our Cross Country Day, held under perfect sunny skies. The atmosphere was full of energy from start to finish, with students showing incredible determination, resilience, and team spirit.

It was fantastic to see so many parents taking part alongside the students, creating a real sense of community and shared achievement.

Congratulations to all our runners and race winners, and a special mention to the Yellow Team for taking the overall victory, with Green Team finishing a very close second in what was a tightly contested competition.

School Production: My Fierce Lady

Excitement was building across the school as students prepared for the upcoming production of My Fierce Lady, written by Aspire teachers Bethany Blakemore and Emma Batten.

The play explores identity, ambition, and the importance of staying true to yourself, following the journey of a young woman navigating the pressures of success and self-discovery.

We are incredibly proud of the students involved and look forward to what promises to be a fantastic performance.Ceck out the “Full review of My Fierce Lady.”

Learning Beyond the Classroom

This month, students took their learning out into the Algarve, exploring history, culture, and nature first-hand.

A trip to Lagos offered a powerful and thought-provoking experience, including a visit to the Slave Market Museum and Lagos Museum, followed by time exploring the historic old town and relaxing in beautiful natural surroundings at Mata Nacional de Barão de São João.

Students also visited Quarteira Market and Museum, where they learned about the area’s rich history while experiencing the vibrant local fish market and enjoying time on the beach, perfectly linking with their Ancient World studies.

Our younger learners explored Portuguese heritage at the Museu de Loulé, engaging with the story of the “Lenda das Amendoeiras” through interactive and hands-on activities that brought culture and language to life.

Science, Curiosity and Discovery

Science played a big role this month, with students across the school engaging in hands-on, practical learning.

Our Year 3 students became “light explorers”, working in teams to understand how light travels and reflects using mirrors and torches. The excitement when they successfully guided light to hit their target was a brilliant moment of teamwork and problem solving.

Our in-house Science Competition brought together secondary students from across year groups, encouraging collaboration, enthusiasm, and a healthy sense of competition. Congratulations to Mars House for taking the win.

Meanwhile, our Biology Club completed their radish growing experiment, testing different soil conditions and analysing the results. This hands-on project helped students understand the real impact of soil quality on plant growth, while also developing their research and observation skills.

Sport and Enrichment

We were delighted to welcome the team from the Paul McGinley Golf Academy, who delivered a fantastic day of golf sessions for our students.

From primary through to secondary, students had the opportunity to learn new skills in a fun, supportive environment, guided by experienced and inspiring coaches. The enthusiasm across the school was clear, and many students are already eager for more.

Lessons will begin proper next term, places will fill up quickly so keep your eyes out for more information.

Looking Ahead: University Pathways

Our older students attended the International University Fair at the Hilton Vilamoura, where they explored a wide range of future opportunities.

With universities from across Europe in attendance, including Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Switzerland, and Ireland, students gained valuable insights into their next steps beyond school.

Events like this play an important role in helping students feel confident and prepared for the future.

Community, Connection and Culture

We also celebrated World Book Day, continuing a tradition that reflects the strong sense of community within Aspire.

Older students spent time reading to younger pupils, creating meaningful connections and sharing the joy of storytelling. Moments like these highlight the supportive and family-oriented environment we are proud to offer.

End of Term Celebration: A Voyage Through the Ages

The month concluded with a truly special End of Term Celebration, Os Descobrimentos – A Voyage Through the Ages, where students brought their learning to life through performance and storytelling.

The event reflected the children’s exploration of Portuguese history, showcasing their understanding of the Age of Discoveries in a creative and engaging way. From costumes to presentations, it was clear how much effort and enthusiasm had gone into preparing for the occasion.

Students performed with confidence and pride, sharing their work with families in a memorable afternoon that highlighted both their learning and their growing self-expression.

It was a wonderful way to end the term, celebrating not only academic progress but also creativity, culture, and the strong sense of community at Aspire.

Looking Ahead

March has been a month full of energy, exploration, and achievement across the school, ending on a high with our End of Term Celebration.

We are incredibly proud of our students and the way they embrace every opportunity to learn, grow, and support one another.

AIS Cross Country 2025 – What a Fantastic Day!

What an incredible afternoon we had at this year’s AIS Inter-House Cross Country Meet! From Nursery to Year 13 — and even our brilliant parents — the whole school turned out in full spirit, showing true determination, sportsmanship, and house pride.

The sun was shining, the encouragement was loud, and the energy was infectious!

From our tiniest runners in Reception to the seniors charging through the course, every single participant gave it their all — and we couldn’t be prouder.

Huge Thank You To:

All Aspire International School staff and organisers who planned and executed the event so smoothly
The volunteers and helpers who kept things running like clockwork
Every parent and supporter who showed up and cheered
And of course, to our students and families who raced with heart and hustle

The Yellows Won but well don to everyone who took part, what a great day

Well done to all our winners, but just as much applause to everyone who laced up their trainers and took part. Whether you finished first or last — you made it a day to remember.

AIS Inter-House Cross Country Returns – Monday 12th May 2025

Get ready to lace up your trainers and cheer on our young athletes – it’s time for the annual AIS Inter-House Cross Country Meet!

Following the fantastic success of last year’s event, this year promises even more excitement, friendly competition, and community spirit. Taking place on Monday 12th May 2025, this whole-school event will see students from Nursery to Year 13 take part in a fun-filled afternoon of races – with a special appearance by our most enthusiastic competitors: the parents!

🏡 House Spirit in Action

Each participant earns 10 points for their House, with additional points awarded for race winners. Whether your child is a seasoned runner or just running for fun, everyone is encouraged to join in and show their House pride!

13:35 – Whole School Fun Run (10 points per participant)
13:50 – Year 10+
14:15 – Nursery & Reception
14:20 – Years 1 & 2
14:30 – Years 3 & 4
14:45 – Years 5 & 6

This year’s schedule has been adjusted to allow older students time to return to their studies as exam season approaches.

Whether you’re racing or supporting from the sidelines, this is always one of the most energetic and heartwarming events in the AIS calendar.

Aspire International School’s Inaugural Spelling Bee: A Celebration of Language and Learning

A Historic Event in Primary Education

Last Friday marked a significant milestone at Aspire International School as our primary students participated in the school’s first-ever Spelling Bee Competition. The atmosphere was electric, with students and teachers alike buzzing with excitement. The event commenced with English spellings and concluded with Portuguese, reflecting our commitment to bilingual excellence.

The Origins of Spelling Bees

The term “spelling bee” has an interesting history. The word “bee” in this context refers to a gathering or contest, a usage dating back to the 18th century. The earliest known example in print is “spinning bee” from 1769. Spelling competitions became particularly popular in the United States, with the first national spelling bee organised by the National Education Association in 1908. This rich tradition has now found its place at Aspire International School.

Highlights of the Competition

The Spelling Bee featured students from various primary grades, each eager to showcase their linguistic prowess. The event was structured in rounds, beginning with simpler words and progressing to more challenging ones. Students had the opportunity to ask for word definitions and examples of their usage in sentences, thereby enhancing their understanding and ensuring clarity.

Our top spellers—Zelia, Heitor, Timur, Emelina, Hendrix, Francesco, Mazzy, Alejandro, and Alex demonstrated exceptional skill and composure under pressure. Their achievements were celebrated with certificates and a small sweet treat, acknowledging their hard work and dedication.

Looking Ahead: Fostering Diverse Talents

While spelling bees are an excellent way to promote language skills, we recognise the importance of nurturing various talents. In the future, Aspire International School plans to host events that showcase a wide range of student strengths, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to shine.
